Will Windows Monthly Rollups Work with EBS?

$
0
0

Microsoft logoMicrosoft announced that they will release security and reliability patches in a single Monthly Rollup update instead of as individual patches.  They also announced the availability of a single Security-only rollup.

This change was effective from October 2016 onwards and applies to:

  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • windows Server 2012
  • Windows Server 2012 R2

Compatibility with Oracle E-Business Suite

Microsoft Monthly Rollups and Security-only updates are intended to be backwards-compatible with all applications. Existing Windows functionality does not change.

It is expected that these updates will be fully-compatible with Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1 and 12.2.  We expect that we will do periodic testing of selected updates, but will do not expect to release regular certification announcements for them.

EBS customers do not have to wait for explicit certification announcements before applying Microsoft Monthly Updates or Security-only updates to their Windows desktops or servers.

Licensing EBS on Oracle Cloud

$

[Guest Authors: Terri Noyes and Robert Farrington]

This article describes how you license Oracle E-Business Suite to run in Oracle Cloud.  The licensing terms depend on your deployment choice, so let's start by revisiting EBS Deployment Options on Oracle Cloud.

Deployment Options

Running Oracle E-Business Suite on Oracle Cloud requires, at minimum, a subscription to the Oracle Compute Cloud Service (Compute), part of Oracle's Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), to provide the resources you need. You can then choose to run EBS on a single node (left-hand figure below) or multiple nodes (middle figure below).  In these two scenarios, your application and database tiers both run on IaaS.

An alternative is to run your EBS database on Oracle's Database Cloud Service (DBCS) or Oracle Database Exadata Cloud Service (Exadata CS), by subscribing to whichever of these best meets your needs. This is shown in the right-hand figure below.

Single node on Compute

Multiple nodes on Compute

Multiple nodes on Compute + Database Cloud Service (DBCS or Exadata CS)

  • Provides an all-in-one option
  • Suitable for demonstration, sandbox, and training environments
  • Faciliates exploration of new functionality
    • Supports scale-out of application tier
    • Suitable for development, testing, or production environments
    • Supports full-scale deployment
      • Supports scale-out of application and database tiers
      • Leverages DBCS or Exadata CS to improve manageability and support Oracle RAC
      • Stores your data in Oracle Database Cloud Service (DBCS or Exadata CS)

      Licensing Models

Oracle E-Business Suite is licensed by user per product or module, and EBS licenses are required for production use only (whether in the cloud or on-premises).  Oracle E-Business Suite comes with restricted-use Database Enterprise Edition (DB EE) and Application Server Enterprise Edition (AS EE) licenses.  Full licenses for DB EE and AS EE are required to run EBS with customizations.

Oracle Compute Cloud Service follows the Bring Your Own License (BYOL) licensing model.  This means that if you choose to run EBS on Compute only (as seen in the left-hand and middle figures above), you can use your existing EBS, Database and Application Server licenses.

If you choose to run your EBS database on DBCS or on Exadata CS (as shown in the right-hand figure above), you subscribe to the database service separately. When the EBS database runs on DBCS, EBS today requires either the DBCS Enterprise Edition - High Performance option or DBCS Enterprise Edition - Extreme Performance option. On-premises database licenses cannot be exchanged for DBCS and Exadata CS licenses, but you may contact your sales representative for information about available discounts.

The following table summarizes licensing information for the three main categories of EBS components (EBS, FMW and Database), based on the following available deployment options: on-premises, IaaS only, IaaS + DBCS, or IaaS + ExaCS. It also distinguishes between a lift and shift migration, and a new cloud implementation.

How Secure is Your Enterprise Architecture?

          $
          0
          0

Written by Veronik Beyst, Senior Marketing Manager, Oracle University

If your organization is like many others, enterprise security is nothing more than an add-on to implementation projects and deployed systems. But as massive data breaches occur across the globe, it’s time to give security a closer look.

In addition to trying to avoid security breaches that damage the business, as well as reputations, organizations face an emerging set of national and international security regulations and policies covering data privacy and security.

For example, the European Union must now deal with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is intended to strengthen data protection and simplify the regulatory environment for international business.

GDPR takes effect in May, 2018 and is very serious, as non-compliance can lead to huge fines.

Taking the time to incorporate security into the enterprise architecture is vital - and it’s never too late to start.

We invite you to view an Oracle University recorded webinar that will prepare you to deal with this sensitive area.

Security in the Age of Mega Breaches

This high-level overview will help you understand the security risks you're facing:

          • Learn about Oracle products and available training to support the centralized management and enforcement of security policy.
          • See why your greatest threat might not be an external hacker, but an inside professional with access to your data.
          • Hear about some of the best-known security breaches in recent history, including security breaches at Kaspersky Lab (internal espionage) and Yahoo! (massive data breach).

The free webinar is presented by Martin Schlichenmayer, Principal Sales Consultant at Oracle University EMEA, who has been in the IT business since 1986, when he started implementing and developing front and back end databases and engineering data warehouses.

Martin's expertise includes database administration, PeopleSoft and Middleware, with particular emphasis on the SOA Suite.

His in-depth knowledge of Oracle technologies, together with many years instructing and consulting in the IT business, currently helps customers build comprehensive organizational training plans.

          Some interesting security statistics:

          • 50% of malware propagation is because of misconfiguration, which can be addressed through training.
          • 76% of organizations have end users with lost, stolen or weak passwords.
          • From 2007 to 2013, hacking increased by 1600%.

The database experiences 52% of attacks, while the network experiences 34%; however, organizations allocate just 15% of security resources to protect the database, while 67% of resources go toward securing the network.

Through this webinar, learn more about Oracle University’s Security Learning Subscription, which provides comprehensive training to help companies protect sensitive data.

This interactive information security training addresses:

          • Security and risk management
          • Asset security
          • Security engineering
          • Cyber security
          • Identity and access management
          • Security assessment and testing
          • Security operations
          • Software development security

Purchasing this digital subscription gives you access to assessments to test your knowledge, as well as hands-on, interactive instructor-led courses. This subscription is a flexible, 24/7 learning option that is continually updated as new content becomes available.

Thanks to a lot of helpful feedback from my colleague Graeme Mawson, I updated the NetBeans plugin that provides tooling for hybrid mobile development with Oracle JET.

          Go here to get it:

          http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/64070/yooraclejet

Now, instead of multiple different wizards, each for a different Oracle JET template, and each for a different mobile platform, everything is now integrated into one single wizard named "Hybrid Oracle JET Application":

And here you see the next step of the wizard above, with all the options available in a single panel, plus a helpful preview at the end to show you the command you have constructed via the UI elements:

Now everything is integrated into a single wizard, as you can see.

The source code is here, pull requests are welcome:

In a previous article, VirtualBox with SOA, BPM, OSB and BAM in 33 minutes, i described how you could quickly create a new Oracle VirtualBox image from scratch with SOA 12cR1. When following the instructions in this article you get almost the same result, only differences are that you will have SOA 12cR2 installed with Oracle StreameXplorer.

Because the preparation is almost the same, follow the instructions in the VirtualBox with SOA, BPM, OSB and BAM in 33 minutes, till the step “Install Oracle Linux”. Only use the Github repository reddipped/soa12cR2install instead of reddipped/soa12cR1install. Continue from there with the following steps to complete the installation.

          Install Oracle Db 12c SE2

Now Linux is up and running, logon as Oracle and run the installation script for Oracle DB Standard Edition 2 from the shared folder soa12cR1install/Db12cSE2.

          Install JDK 8u65

Install Java 8u65 by executing the following commands as Oracle.

When installing oracle products silently the location of the oracle inventory location should be created. This file specifies the location of the Oracle Inventory directory where the Installer creates the inventory of Oracle products installed on the system. Just cut-and-paste the following instructions as user Oracle. Read the complete article here.
