This year we will have a new monthly recurring topic:Spotlight on a new Hire.

In this regular topic we will focus on a new hire from a different country within EMEA. This month we start with the story of Jacob from the UK.

What is your background and what is your position in Oracle.

My name is Jacob; I am a student studying Web Design at Stafford University and I began my year’s work placement at Oracle on the 1st August 2012. At Oracle I work with the Expenses team within the Finance department. The areas of work I cover include a range of things such as, data implementation, application setups, application testing and debugging and many more.

Why did you choose to work for Oracle

Being that I am a Web Design student, people found it strange that I would apply for my placement at Oracle, but I know Oracle is a massive and increasingly growing organisation and I just knew getting a placement here would give me such a great experience, as well as a greater knowledge of other areas within IT.

How was the recruitment process organised

I applied online through the under-graduate scheme on the Oracle website (www.oracle.com/careers) and they got back to me within a couple of weeks. They asked for a placement application form/CV and I was later invited to an interview day. There were multiple other under-graduates/graduates that attended the day and we all contributed in a number of tasks throughout the day. We were shown around the site and had lunch in the main canteen and then an individual interview at the end of the day. I felt really relaxed throughout the whole day and it was actually really fun!

How did you experience your first weeks/months and how did Oracle support you in settling in.

My first couple of weeks mostly involved getting to know the system and applications I would be working with for the months to come. It took time, but I received a lot of help from my manager and I never felt scared to ask for any guidance or advice. They made me feel really welcome and it was quite laid back.

What was the most challenging / rewarding situation in your job so far?

The most challenging situation in my job so far has been working with my team to meet short deadlines, it can be quite difficult during busy deadline periods as many other areas of the business are attempting to access the same system, but once I completed my work I really felt I made valuable contribution and felt really good about myself.  It’s been great working as part of a team and the experience you can take away from these kinds of scenarios is huge!

Do you have any hints or tips for students and graduates that want to join Oracle

If you’re looking to join Oracle then don’t hesitate! Definitely apply, it’s been such a great experience so far and there is so much that I can take away from the job to aid me in the future. Be yourself in the interview process, don’t lie or try to sell yourself for something you are not, just be friendly and honest!
