MetLife, a leading global provider of insurance, annuities and employee benefits, has been an Oracle customer and user for many years, and uses Oracle technology for many of its mission-critical applications. On top of the Oracle Database, they deployed business applications from Oracle such as PeopleSoft, Enterprise Performance Management solutions, and OBIEE.
For failover scenarios, MetLife deployed Oracle Data Guard a while back, and soon realized that with new capabilities introduced with Oracle Active Data Guard, internal global reporting functionality can easily be improved by generating reports from the open, and otherwise idle, standby database.
To increase internal resource utilization even more, MetLife made the decision to use Oracle Advanced Compression, that reduced disk space considerably for archiving requirements and production systems alike. In production environments, the savings were even multiplied as it also reduced the amount of data that gets shipped over the wire to, and stored at, every standby database.
