Hi! My name is Ionuț and I am the Manager of the Product
Development IT team based in Romania. As is introduction time, I will also tell
you something about me: I have always liked good stories, with passionate
people chasing their goals and fulfilling their passions.
So I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a story
It is about a handful of people who started a new team, with its own culture and a new friendship. Each came with the best skills they had and strived to learn the ones they needed. Some came with database skills and learned programming in scripting languages (Perl, KSH), others came with Java Enterprise skills and made those flourish by developing new JavaEE applications, but also stepped up to help others do scripting and operating system administration and learnt new languages.
Others joined with all sorts of qualities, like scripting, database administration, sql programming, user-interface programming skills like PHP and JQuery and others came with Linux knowledge. Some knew more, others less. But they all found that they could learn from each other and from the experience they had.
So they started off doing little tasks, coming up with new ideas and implementing them. They needed to copy whole environments (everything from installed servers to configured applications) from one machine to the other which did in the simplest way possible.
But it took a lot of time. So someone thought they might write a program that connects from one machine to several and transfers in parallel which brought a lot of speed. Then they needed to search and replace configuration details in files so they did that using simple Linux commands.
However the commands needed to be issued every time and someone had to watch them finish and start others. So someone had experience with search and replace engines and wrote a program that was configurable and did all of the above automatically.
Then they saw that copying databases took days. So someone with database skills proposed to implement something found in the documentation, but rarely implemented in practice. That engineer came up with a solution that reduced the copying of large databases from many days to a few minutes. Those with user interface skills built a web-facing application that is fast and now controls all the processes graphically. The feedback was good and another application was built.
As the team grew in skills and numbers, so did their friendship. They work together, go out together, play together and share the important events in their lives with each other.
In any good story, the characters “live happily ever after”– and this one is no exception. Its characters are still happily working and they are always happy to welcome new people to join in on their adventure.
Speaking of joining, the little story above that I like so much has a message too: no one has all of the skills right from the beginning.
