Middle East eCommerce – Shopping is Big Here
I just got back from a week-long visit to the Middle East spending time with retailers in UAE and Kuwait. It was the height of summer, with temperatures around 44C/111F and the holy month of Ramadan – a uniquely Middle Eastern experience.
Also uniquely Middle Eastern was the state of retail. Wherever I turned, concierges, friends and well-wishers suggested I visit their country’s malls. From the Dubai Mall, to the Emirates Mall, to the Avenues Mall in Kuwait. Shopping is big here. In 1996 Dubai established the 1-month “Shopping Festival”. Even Ramadan has been intertwined with a shopping experience, with malls hanging greetings of “Ramadan Kareem” throughout the halls and certain malls running Ramadan Campaigns (‘ A Ramadan to Remember’http://www.tradearabia.com/news/RET_239438.html)
I had to see what they had in store. Each mall is an architectural marvel. The Burj Al Khalifa, at 829.8 m (2,722 ft) is the tallest building in the world and an anchor of the Dubai Mall. The mall of the Emirates includes a ski slope, complete with real snow. Each mall is marbled and cool, comparable to malls in the US (Natick Mall, Mall of America, Destiny USA) or Europe (Galleries Lafayette in Paris, Westfield mall in London, Colombo Centro Comercial in Lisbon) but for an over-the-top attraction, some Islamic-influenced architectural details and an advertising break for Ramadan prayers. A great majority of the retailers are familiar- from the highest end Tiffany’s, Chopard, Rolex, Stella McCartney to the practical Nike, Gap, Starbucks.
Each one of the retailers I visited during the business trip posed two questions:
- There is so much traffic in the mall – why should I go online?
- Who are your examples in the Middle East?
The questions were startling in their own rights. The first question about going online was a surprising one coming from retailers who are actively engaged in an online initiative. Data supports the fact that the ecommerce industry in the Middle East is growing:
“ The estimated number of internet users in the Middle East is 90 Million and only 15% of Middle East businesses have an online presence. B2C eCommerce sales in MENA will reach an estimated $15 billion in 2015 (up from $9 billion in 2012) . The value of mCommerce in MENA could reach US $4.9 billion by 2015 .”http://www.go-gulf.com/blog/ecommerce-middle-east/
Over 10% of online users in the UAE, Saudi & Qatar purchase online at least 3 times a month.

As with online traffic – conversion is the true measure of sales. Although the malls attract traffic thanks to their sights and cool oasis, conversion seems low with few shops full and hands empty. The Malls are such a feature of socializing and entertaining that shopping in these locales is a secondary priority to relaxing and connecting.
Visa has called the MENA region the “fastest region in the world for eCommerce,” citing “45% year-on-year increase to 15 billion USD in 2012”http://www.arabianbusiness.com/mideast-e-commerce-growth-fastest-in-world-says-visa-502465.html
The numbers in the two articles don’t quite add up – and is part of the problem another one of our observations? Consumers in the MENA region certainly shop online today, but may be forced to shop outside of their region based on the availability of retailers operating online in MENA.
The second question was surprising because the retailers with whom we were speaking have the first mover advantage in their markets. Relatively few retailers in MENA operate online. Though Dubai and other GCC countries may be at the forefront of a brick and mortar shopping experience, they lag behind in terms of mobile and online offerings.
Prospects and customers in other emerging regions, such as Russia and China ask for local partners but look for Best in Class examples in Europe and North America to set their charter. These regions resemble the Middle East in many patterns and trends and are determined to seize the opportunity, realizing that as soon as the market matures, it might be too late to defend against the behemoths such as Amazon and eBay. I would argue that the Middle East is better poised than Russia and China to seize opportunity thanks to stable transportation and infrastructure, large disposable income in its potential customer base, and historical tradition of trade.
Currently, the market lags behind. The few retailers transacting online today fail to take advantage of the online and mobile commerce features that enable personalization and merchandizing to optimize the experience and prefer to take a more functional approach. Are they leaving the door open to external retailers and the Amazon and eBays of the world to dominate their local markets?
There is such a strong opportunity in the Middle East for Mobile and Online Commerce. The region also has a historical legacy as a re-export and trade hub. Now is the time to take that experience online.
Windows or Linux? Choosing Your Development Platform
When starting to develop extensions or customizations for Fusion Applications, one of the first decisions is the operating system platform. This short post will offer some guidance.
Fusion Applications itself is certified for several Unix-based operating systems as well as the Windows platform. JDeveloper, too, runs thanks to its Java-based implementation on many operating systems, including some like MacOS that are not supported by Fusion Applications themselves.
So which platform should you choose for your development environment?
The development teams at Oracle for the most part use Oracle Linux as the operating system for their development machines. They run JDeveloper, WLS, and databases on it. It’s very stable and efficient. We in the Developer Relations team tend to use Windows for our work to match what is often the platform of choice for 3rd party developers and consultants for their laptops and desktops.
Ultimately it doesn’t matter which operating system you choose: JDeveloper is platform-independent and in our experience runs equally well on Windows and Unix/Linux. If you install a standalone WebLogic Server on your development machine, you will need to download the version from eDelivery for your development OS, which can be different from the operating system that your test or production servers run on. For instance, you could develop on Windows, have a standalone Windows WebLogic server and ultimately target a Linux or Solaris environment with your customization or extension.
If you have a team of developers, it probably makes sense to standardize on a common platform to ensure any scripts or other tools can be shared and you don’t have to worry about CR/LF issues for text files.
Whether you prefer Windows or Linux, you should use a 64-bit version. The minimum usable memory configuration is 8 GB and a 64-bit JDK is required, so a 32-bit operating system is just not a viable option.
Transaction Timeout in Agile + Weblogic
We may see different transaction timeout error in Agile (It also happens to other applications). There are two places where control the Timeout setting, JTA, EJB tier and Loadbalancer/Proxy. I will demonstrate three cases to show how to identify them. Though most of the timeout issues are caused by applications and we MUST find out the REAL root cause to fix them definitely, increase transaction-timeout still can resolve most of these cases as a temporary solution/workaround.
JTA Timeout
JTA Timeout is the system-wide setting for the weblogic domain, in Agile it is agileDomain. That is to say, all the transaction are controlled by JTA globally in the same domain. In Agile, all of database access timeout are detected by JTA setting. For example:

EJB Timeout
In Agile, many EJB session beans MAY have their own transaction timeout settings which override the JTA system-wide timeout. They are defined in the weblogic-ejb-jar.xml. If you find the timeout value in error log does not match the one in JTA, then you may have to check the error trace carefully. Because it may be set elsewhere. End of Life for StorageTek T9840D Tape Drive
Oracle is announcing the EOL of the StorageTek T9840D tape drive. Prior to providing any final quotes, we must let customers know that there is a limited supply of new StorageTek T9840 tape cartridges.

Another StorageTek T9840 tape drive generation is not planned. The following are the operating environment transition plans:

JDeveloper 12c and Maven: Using relative paths in your POM files
One of the greatest things about JDeveloper 12c is the significantly improved support for Apache Maven. By default, the POM files produced by my favorite IDE contain some absolute paths, such as the folder for the ojmake/ojdeploy executables and references to project (.jpr) and application (.jws) files. Here is a sample of such paths extracted from an application I created on a Windows machine.

This is perfectly fine if your development team uses workstations that are configured in a consistent way and run under the same operating system. It is often not the case in the real world. Fortunately, Maven provides features that make it very easy to use relative paths instead.
The first thing you should know is that Maven supports the use of variables in POM files. Those variables are always referenced using the following syntax:
${variable_name}
There are several built-in variables provided by Maven. One of them is ${basedir}, which points to the folder where the current POM is located. In addition, Maven can access any environment variable defined by the operating system. This is achieved though the following syntax:
${env.variable_name}
Thus, it is possible to remove all absolute paths from the sample above by using ${basedir} and referencing an environment variable. Suppose I created such a variable named OJ_HOME, which points to C:\Oracle\Middleware1212\jdeveloper\jdev\bin. Then, the POM would look like this:

(mobile web, mobile apps, mobile first etc.), we’re now at a place where organizations
have a better understanding of each approach, and how to apply them to drive
specific business outcomes, whether that be engagement, self-service or
commerce.
When it comes to mobile site management, most customers we speak with are now viewing this as an integrated part of managing their overall online experience, while acknowledging that it comes with a distinct set of requirements that may need to be met separately, depending upon specific objectives. They want to maximize efficiencies by reusing content and integrating site authoring and publishing processes across web and mobile, and by leveraging responsive design to cut down on site development and speed time to market. However, they also want the flexibility of a web experience management solution that can provide as much support as possible for mobile-specific requirements when needed, from ease of mobile template customization, to device management.
Multi-channel Gets Back the Brand Site
Managing content and experiences across multiple channels has continued to be a tricky problem to solve. Basically, as more online channels have emerged – from brand sites, to micro and multi-lingual sites, to email campaigns, through to mobile and social– the more complex content management has become for online marketers. Meanwhile, against this backdrop of channel proliferation, the value and function of the brand site itself began to get called into question (remember the trend of companies dropping their .coms and moving to Facebook?).
What we’re seeing now is the reassertion of the
importance of the brand site; the idea of the corporate .com as a center point
of digital experience. The content that drives
activity on other online touch points (email offers, social promotions,
microsite landing pages) ultimately points back to the brand site, where all of
these channels converge, thereby centralizing marketing processes such as lead
capture or facilitating deeper brand engagement.
As a part of this effort, web marketers are looking to be able to access the content that is originating from other channels (regardless of where it is stored), from within the web experience management system authoring environment, and incorporate it within brand sites to produce a more unified, cross-channel experience.
Personalization Comes of Age
The drive to personalize digital experiences has been an interesting trend to watch; it’s
perhaps the one that has experienced the most hype over time, but it has also
been the slowest to take hold, as it has taken a number of years for solutions
to get up to where the market needs them to be.
Of course, personalization is a broad term, and it can encompass
everything from targeting experiences to different customer segments, to making
online search more relevant and intuitive through guided navigation, to providing
tools that enable site visitors to tailor their own online experience.
One thing that is certain is that has finally reached the tipping point, where every organization we engage with has some sort of personalization initiative on their short list of digital experience priorities. That said, not all organizations want to jump in with both feet, especially when it comes to areas like content targeting. Some organizations are still choosing to start with smaller-scale experimentation, using specific pages or promotional sites as targeting test grounds. Others are taking a more committed approach and are implementing content targeting throughout the web and mobile sites. Meanwhile, a small, but growing amount are investing in fully automated, predictive solutions.
This latter area is where we expect to see the most interest and growth in the coming year. Web marketers are beginning to see the power of connecting the native targeting engines in web experience management systems to predictive solutions that can offset the labor associated with managing segmenting and targeting data through automation, while delivering higher success rates for metrics like click-throughs and conversions.

Floating Editors in Oracle SQL Developer v4
Working on a table? Maybe you need to investigate the stats while you also browse some data.
But this is a BIG table. You know how to do the ‘split document trick,’ but that’s not quite cutting it. You need more screen real estate. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could drag that table viewer off over to your 2nd or 3rd (or 4th!!!) monitor?
Well in Oracle SQL Developer v4, now you can!
Float Your Document
Now throw in a right-click
If you do a ‘clone,’ you’ll get a second copy of the document, in this case a second BEER table editor.
If I ‘float’ it, it will let the editor ‘escape’ the main application. Freedom!
In Windows, if I mouse over my application icon in the program bar, I’ll see I have more than one window now.
And yes, you can clone your document as many times as you want. You can even clone your clones.
And when you’re ready to bring your floating document back ‘inside’ of SQL Developer proper, just right-click again and choose ‘Dock.’

Oracle GoldenGate Patch Release 11.2.1.0.7 is Available

Oracle GoldenGate 11.2.1.0.7 cumulative patch release is now generally available and can be downloaded from the My Oracle Support website. This patch includes support for MySQL NDB Cluster 7.1 and 7.2, as well as Sybase ASE 15.7 support. There are number of fixes and stabilization enhancements in this release, especially for those using the Oracle GoldenGate Management Pack to monitor GoldenGate.
